Mentawai tribe – Siberut – Wedding and traditionnal culture – Indonesia
This video was shot during a trip to Mentawai Islands in Indonesia.
The Mentawai Islands are a chain of about seventy islands and islets approximately 150 kilometres (93 miles) off the western coast of Sumatra in Indonesia.Suberut is the largest one.
About 60% of Siberut is covered with tropical rainforest, which shelters a rich biological community that has earned a spot for UNESCO biosphere reserve.
The native tribes living there live a semi-nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle in the coastal and rainforest environments of the islands. Mentawais are characterised by their heavy spirituality, body art (tattos) and their tendency to sharpen their teeth, a practice they feel makes one beautiful.
