Coronavirus community spread in India

As Coronavirus cases are rocketing in India, there are all chances that many regions may be facing Covid 19 community transmission. What is stopping government to acknowledge community spread in India, ask health experts. Coronavirus cases in the country have crossed 1.2 million mark with death count touching 30 thousand.

Rapid coronavirus community spread in India

In the wake of nationwide labor migration and discontinued contact tracing of Covid patients, health experts are asking government to acknowledge community spread in the country. Government has been adamant so far, saying it’s seeing just local spread amenable to containment.

However, rapidly growing outbreak in a number of regions in the country shows a picture totally opposite to government’s claims. It seems either the government cannot differentiate between local and community transmission or it doesn’t want to reveal reality to the public.

The government sticks to its stand of not acknowledging community transmission. However, views of scientists and health experts are quite opposite; who say that it’s surely a community outbreak and government’s position is totally untenable.

Experts on Covid 19 community spread in India

Medical people are asking at various platforms, what is stopping the government from confirming the community phase in India? We are into Covid 19 community phase now, said IMA Board of Hospitals Chairman Dr VK Monga. The government is not acknowledging it but the way people are infecting suggests community spread in the country, he added.

Elderly people, who did not step out of home since lockdown and women who do not go out in weeks, are getting infection, Dr Monga said. Kerala government has already acknowledged community spread in the state. Although it has fewer cases compared to the worst hit states like Maharashtra and Delhi, he added.

According to many health experts, it’s not going to matter if there is community transfer stage. Because same process of testing, isolating and treatment has to follow by the authorities. Also, general public will have to follow same safety procedures and take same precautions. That’s why government’s admission of community transmission will not make any change in the overall process.

Government not acknowledging

If government acknowledges coronavirus community spread, there would be no containment zone, red zone, orange zone or green zone in any region. As these zones will not be required then. Maybe, government is trying to escape that situation when people will ask about its strategy to fight Covid 19 pandemic in the absence of any zone.

And because government has no strategy, it has no answer to this question. So, it is avoiding to acknowledge the community spread and letting the things go on their own. A few months ago, it announced an immediate countrywide lockdown without having any solid strategy.

The lockdown imposed on people at the time when just a few hundred Covid cases reported. Even after getting a long lesson from other countries, where coronavirus had made early knocks, the lockdown proved to be a total failure in India. It started with wrong timing to impose lockdown just to show the world how alert and fast we were to fight a pandemic.

Government’s wrong moves

The country unlocked when we were rapidly moving towards pandemic peak because we could not afford a lockdown any longer. Again, wrong timing to unlock because other countries preferred to lock themselves when they were moving towards the peak. And they unlocked when the number of Covid infected and death rate were declining.

What went wrong with us was that government’s priority was basically inclined towards being a world leader, and not based on people’s safety and prosperity. That’s the reason why millions of migrant workers suffered while moving towards their hometowns during nationwide lockdown. And now 50,000 Covid infected per day is broadly the result of government’s bad policies and mismanagement at every level.

Now, government may not be ready to acknowledge community transmission in many regions. And it may be claiming to have every thing in control and hiding its failures in pandemic management. But, health experts around the country are questioning on its position and further plans to deal with the outbreak.
